What is a custom clothing/product design system?
A custom product/clothing design system allows users to place a design, image, embroidery, or artwork on another product, such as a cup, t-shirt, garment, bag, cap, sweater, etc. The custom shopping cart system takes the image that the customer wants to place and shows them a preview of how that image will look on their desired item. This custom shopping cart system at times can also change the color of the product dynamically (such as clicking to change the t-shirt from red to black), can place text on the product (such as "Happy Anniversary"), and is able to allow the user to upload their custom image to place on a garment.
How do I install a custom clothing/product design system?
Installing a custom product design system into your shopping cart requires first chosing your desired shopping cart (see shopping cart reviews), programming and coding the module/extension, testing it, and then uploading the code. You really want to make sure you chose your shopping cart carefully that you want to add the module to, because once you start programming the custom module, it will not be easy to port the module to another shopping cart.
Technology required for a custom product/garment/clothing design system
There are several options in how you execute your custom design system. We will discuss solutions that can be implemented in PHP/MySQL here since we typically don't deal with ASP.net. Here are 2 methods:
Flash & Flash Actionscripting: This will give you a more robust design and editing system. This would be ideal for if you want your user to be able to draw their own design, zoom in and out, change colors and sizing without reloading the web page, and do other advanced features.
Advantages:
+ Live editing and manipulating of the image
+ More advanced drawing tools
Disadvantages
- Harder to integrate into the shopping cart code
- Takes longer to load
PHP Using GD Library and ImageMagick: This option is good for simple image placement, and is cleaner and easier to integrate into shopping carts. GD Library for PHP has many useful features that can be integrated into the design script. Among some of the most useful new features are alpha channels. An alpha channel is basically a selection in your image that allows you to put one image on top of another image without seeing the extra border of the image. Many images are not boxes, but rather text, or perhaps an asymetrycal design. Your alpha channel can be saved to the image in Photoshop and used as your image border rather than being a square block.
Advantages:
+ Better for simple image upload and submission sites
+ Cleaner to code and implement
Disadvantages
- Can't edit the product/images without reloading the website page
- Less editing functions
